Here are some songs to get your headphones out for. You know, the songs that you want to hear and tune everything else out.
While I lived in Northern California, I would often walk in the gloomy Humboldt rain listening to music. This past time was sort of like meditation and exercise in one. Only my most favorite songs made the playlist. Now, rain, snow, sleet, or shine, I find any excuse to put on my headphones and listen to some sweet sounds. Here are my top pics: 1.) L.P, Into the Wild 2.) M83, Midnight City 3.) Emily in the Woods, Steal his Heart Two Door Cinema Club
Phoenix Passion Pit Chadwick Stokes Modest Mouse Of Monsters and Men Skrillex Crystal Castles Daft Punk Ellie Goulding Radio head M83 Florence and the Machine Animal Collective Bright Eyes Bob Marley Matt and Kim Nirvana Dave Matthews Band Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros Jack Johnson John Butler Trio MGMT LCD Soundsystem Sigur Ros Bon Iver Jose Gonzalez Kings of Leon Miike Snow Foster the People Emily in the Woods Sun Araw Bag Raiders Genres: folk, dance, dub step, reggae, electronic, experimental rock, psychedelic rock, indie rock, surf music, indietronica
You know those songs: songs that just make you want to sing along. If I made a mix for a road trip, these two songs would definitely be on it. Click here for info on Chadwick Stokes (I'd like mention I love his name, Chadwick, and he co-founded a non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of women all over the world.) If you'd like to sing along, the song's lyrics can be found here. Click here to read about City and Colour. This song would sound even more beautiful with a female voice counterpart, maybe for the lyric "While I'm off chasing my own dreams, sailing around the world. Please know that I'm yours to keep, my beautiful girl [boy]." Click here for the song lyrics. Although I'm not a huge fan of listening to Kimya Dawson's songs, I find her to be an inspirational person.
Click here for some background info to understand why I feel this way. 1.) She's unconventional. I couldn't believe it when I read Kimya Dawson is in her 40's. She's performing and writing songs that any awkward teenager could appreciate and you can tell she's doing it her way. I can't even think of any other songwriters that really sound like her. 2.) She puts raw emotion into her songs, but sings with an I don't care, almost monotone attitude. 3.) She's philanthropic. Here are the lyrics that spurred this post, found here: "When I go for a drive I like to pull off to the side Of the road, turn out the lights, get out and look up at the sky And I do this to remind me that I'm really, really tiny In the grand scheme of things and sometimes this terrifies me But it's only really scary cause it makes me feel serene In a way I never thought I'd be because I've never been So grounded, and so humbled, and so one with everything I am grounded, I am humbled, I am one with everything Rock and roll is fun but if you ever hear someone Say you are huge, look at the moon, look at the stars, look at the sun Look at the ocean and the desert and the mountains and the sky Say I am just a speck of dust inside a giant's eye I am just a speck of dust inside a giant's eye" "When I go for a drive I like to pull off to the side Of the road and run and jump into the ocean in my clothes *I'm smaller than a poppyseed inside a great big bowl And the ocean is a giant that can swallow me whole So I swim for all salvation and I swim to save my soul But my soul is just a whisper trapped inside a tornado So I flip to my back and I float and I sing I am grounded, I am humbled, I am one with everything" "We all become important when we realize our goal Should be to figure out our role within the context of the whole" ~ Kimya Dawson, I Like Giants <3 it. I've always been a song girl. When asked what type of music I like or bands I enjoy, I usually reply with specific songs.
I like having favorite songs because they hold a special meaning, much more than a band or genre as a whole usually does. I usually like bands, but fall in love with songs. Sometimes, I only like one song out of all the works of a musician, but I still acknowledge the song and the musician. I like what I like, it doesn't mean I shouldn't like the band altogether because only one song appeals to me. This isn't to say I don't have favorite bands or music genres, because I definitely do, but I think specific songs can inspire and provoke certain feelings that I wish to feel. Songs also show people what I really like to hear and I find it more interesting to discuss why I like a song in detail, than to discuss why I like a band as a whole. Given that tidbit, I hope to reflect my musical tastes in my blog, in all its variety, by featuring individual songs. I will feature both bands (meaning I love their work and can't find a song I don't like) and specific songs. I'm also intrigued by band information because it sheds light on the reasons behind the creativity; they are, after all, artists. With a history in analyzing literature and poetry, I also find it interesting to do the same with songs. I treat the lyrics as an individual work of art and expression; lyrics are words to ponder. |
